The Long Roll Mary Johnston Books
I found this book to be a generally stirring account of what fighting under the leadership of General “Stonewall” Jackson must have surely felt like during the height of the Civil War (even were some fictional elements included). I might be biased given I'm a bit of a history fan, but this book in particular was one of the better reads on the subject I've come across for being both accurate and detailed. Should you be looking for additional worthy sources about those that served under the 'Stars and Bars' I would also recommend "Four Years in the Stonewall Brigade" ASIN: B01JUTJ9PS and "Recollections of a Confederate Staff Officer" ASIN: B01I01W0GM which also made for interesting reads. Very good books all!Product details

The Long Roll Mary Johnston Books Reviews
Had Stonewall Jackson not been killed one wonders would the Civil War had a different ending. He filled his men with confidence. With his leadership they would keep on fighting against overwhelming odds and even when the South did not prevail they would come away feeling they had not lost the battle.
An excellent history of the Civil War before Gettysburg. Although there is some fiction it is
a great story line and should meet the approval of even the harshest critic. Mary Johnston
was a terrific writer. I highly recommend this book.
i read the first 20 or so pages. i can't force myself to read more. i've read plenty of civil war novels that were written between 1850 and 1900, contemporaneous with the war and the events preceding and following. i am familiar with the dialect, the thought processes, the interaction of characters.
This is a story that few will ever read, because it takes time and an open mind to understand the struggle of this warrior, and his fellow soldiers of the south. There is a picture that becomes vivid in my mind as this story is told. Take a breath and see the past in your eyes.
Considering its date of publishing, it was an interesting account, especially if you are a Civil War buff. The fact that it was a southern woman who had ancestors in the war gave it an interesting slant that is uncommon in many books of the era. It was also historically correct and obviously well researched.
Mary Johnston tells a great story. It’s a semi-historical story about General Stonewall Jackson during the civil war, but it’s also a love story and a story about everyday life in Confederate Virginia.
Her old fashioned prose is sometimes hard to wade through, so I found my self just skimming certain passages, to get on with the story. This was particularly true where she was waxing poetic or painting a picture with words. Or overusing metaphors from Greek or Roman history and legend.
But it’s well worth the effort.
This is a great book. I read about in Colonial Williamsburg's magazine, and they described it as the greatest American civil war novel ever written. The descriptions of battles are vivid. It follows the Stonewall Brigade from first Manassas to Chancellorsville. I'm surprised this novel isn't assigned reading for college history classes covering the civil war. Mary Johnston also conveys the moral and value system of the time, including the attitude of southerners toward slavery and their enslaved. The romance is weak- this is not Gone With The Wind. It's greatness lies in Johnston's ability to convey what life in the Stonewall brigade must have been like as well as what life for the women and slaves at home must have been like. It is also a gripping, what happens next, narrative, even for those of us who know the outcomes of all these historic events.
